| Espina: Ccci, Hall Of Famer
CONGRATULATIONS to the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), the Hall of Famer awardee of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce after bagging for three consecutive years the much coveted award of Outstanding Chamber among 127 or more chambers all over the country. For 86 solid years, CCCI engineered business and growth, and the Cebu Business Month (CBM) held every June of each year for 12 years has been the prime mover in bringing together the multisectoral groups of Cebu, stretching to the national and regional scales, to roadmap the industrial progress of the nation, specifically, Cebu. These efforts benchmarked the collaborative resources of tourism, sme and the ICT, among others. The past presidents and CBM chairpersons have been meeting to further institutionalize the CBM into a foundation for a more effective management of the events.
Treasure sheds
They are this decade's temples of consumerism - the man's answer to the shopping mall - and there's bound to be one opening near you. John McCrone heads out to the hardware barns. One of the fascinations of reality TV shows like Supernanny or Wife Swap is you get to see inside other people's homes. And one of the fascinating discoveries is just how many of these houses feature half-done do-it-yourself projects. The hallway has been stripped back to the plaster. The kitchen has a toothy gap where a cupboard is going to hang. Pipes are exposed in the bathroom. Clearly a weekend project has gone on hold for weeks, months, maybe years; the family grown used to living with the tatty pencil marks and test paint patches on the walls. Perhaps it is just a feature of British and American DIYers.
Ballinger fete marches on despite dismal weather
Kit Hurt and his daughter and grandchildren were among the crowd in 30-degree weather and freezing wind watching the parade in Ballinger on Saturday. "Since they went to all the trouble to have it, we needed to be here to support it," said Hurt, a life-long Ballinger resident and owner of Kit's Body Shop. "That's what it takes in a small town." Despite cold wind and drizzle, Ballinger held its 19th annual Christmas at Olde Ballinger on Saturday. Many families and deer hunters came to Ballinger to do some visiting and Christmas shopping at the same time. The parade started things off at 10 a.m., and the festivities surrounding the courthouse square commenced after the parade went through. Food and craft booths beckoned to visitors, along with a huge tent set up for entertainment and an escape from the weather.
Small business in cross hairs of software piracy crackdown
WASHINGTON (AP) - Michael Gaertner worried he could lose his company. A group called the Business Software Alliance had written him to claim that his 10-person architectural firm in Galveston was using unlicensed software. The letter demanded $67,000 or else the BSA would seek more in court. That amount of money represents most of 1 year's profit at Gaertner's firm. An analysis by The Associated Press reveals that targeting small businesses is a lucrative strategy for the Business Software Alliance. That's the main global copyright-enforcement watchdog for such companies as Microsoft, Adobe Systems and Symantec. Of the $13 million that the BSA reaped in software violation settlements with North American companies last year, the AP found that almost 90% came from small businesses.
