Publishers who make their living from selling links on their sites had a warning shot delivered to them last month with the Google PageRank update and its anti-paid linking initiative. This targeting of high profile sites is meant to discourage sites with paid links and had led to some publishers scratching their heads as to how to continue earning revenue online.

Don't fret just yet however, the paid link business is still rather lucrative and if you are selling relative link advertising which drives results and possibly conversions, your site should be fine. On the other hand, you do not want to have your business at the mercy of Google PageRank (although there are other search engines out there too), and publishers should look at the whole picture, especially providing products or services which generate sound revenue.

Financing expert to share business start-up tips

Even the best business plan needs start-up money.

That's why York Technical College's Entrepreneur Network will host financing guru Bill Payne at 6 p.m. Tuesday to present "Let's Make a Deal -- Financing Options for Entrepreneurs."

Payne, an engineer who started his own electronic materials company in the 1970s and sold it 12 years later to DuPont, now makes his living investing in start-ups and speaking to entrepreneurs. Tuesday, his free presentation will offer advice on how local entrepreneurs can get the capital for their ideas.

"There's a whole sequence on where you go to get the money you need," Payne told The Herald on Tuesday. "If you need $5 million, you don't go to friends and family."

Payne said he'll explain how to approach family and friends for small investments.

Recalled Toy Seen in Target Ads

Some shoppers may have noticed an ad for a recalled toy in a recent Target circular.

It was distributed in Thanksgiving Day newspapers. It included an ad for Aqua Dots. That product was recalled after it was found to contain a chemical which converts into the date rape drug GHB.

Small children might try to eat the beads. Three children in Australia and two in the U.S. have become ill because of eating Aqua Dots.

Target says the recall came after the flyer was already produced. They say they put an ad online and in newspapers nationwide saying Aqua Dots are not available.

Small business group recognizes lawmakers

The California Small Business Association and Roundtable recently recognized three legislators as its Small Business Legislators of the Year.

Winners are chosen annually for their efforts to promote small business survival and participation

�All three of this year�s winners have taken significant efforts to listen to the small business community,� said Betty Jo Toccoli, president of the association and chair of the roundtable.

Winners are nominated by leaders of the association and selected by a vote from the group�s legislative council composed of 1,600 small business owners. In most cases, the winners of the vote then go back to group administrators for a final interview before receiving the award.

Ms. Toccoli said other award standards require that the legislator hold a small business advisory council and participate in the state-recognized Small Business Day in May in order to be eligible for the award.
