Jerry Boehm has been appointed vice president and manager of First Independent Bank's new community banking department. The department focuses on small business clients with lending needs of up to $2 million.

Christie Rust has been promoted to director of sales and marketing for the Hilton Vancouver Washington. Rust, a certified meeting planner, will lead a team of five sales managers and has been part of the Hilton chain for 12 years.

Diana Fitzpatrick has been appointed vice president and cash management officer for Riverview Community Bank. Fitzpatrick will team with commercial banking professionals, branch managers and asset management to help make customers more aware of the bank's cash management solutions.

Jill Homme has been appointed chairwoman of the Board for Educational Opportunities for Children and Families.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA's) Rural Information Center offers a Small Farm Funding Resources guide that contains information about issues to consider before starting a farming operation, with links to full-text guides on how to start a farm business and develop business and marketing plans.

MSU Small Business Development Center offers seminars

The Missouri State University Small Business Development Center will present the following seminars in December.

� E-Commerce and Internet Marketing: Best Practices

City University of New York class builds up minority contractors

Diloo Brown has big plans for Brown Fox Development Corp., the Harlem-based drywall and tiling company.

"One day I want to have the largest drywall company on the East Coast," said Brown, the chief operations officer for Brown Fox.

But Brown, 54, knows just wishing won't make it so. That's why he was among 38 minority and women small contractors who beat a path to City University of New York this fall to enroll in the "Construction Management Building Blocks" training program.

Organized by Skanska USA Building Inc., CCNY and the Harlem Business Alliance, Building Blocks is an eight-week course intended to expose small general and minority contractors to issues they need to master to make their businesses grow. Topics covered during the twice-a-week, three-hour classes - held at CCNY's Harlem campus - include marketing, estimating a job, project startup and closeout, scheduling, accounting, the legal process, human resources, safety and bonding.

Proven marketing tools and successful advertising techniques will boost a small business's bottom line. In a two-hour Business Basics workshop, "The ABC's of Marketing," participants can explore how to put these tools and strategies to use for their business.The Potomac Highlands Small Business Development Center will offer the workshop on Dec. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Bank of Romney Community Center, 95 E. Main St., Romney.Christina Lundberg, an SBDC manager, will show participants how to create a positive image in the minds of customers and how to communicate effectively with them. A four-step model to develop a successful marketing plan will lead participants to accomplish these goals and earn profits by convincing customers that your business knows exactly how to fulfill their needs.The workshop requires pre-registration by 11 a.m.
