Calling all entrepreneurs

A new Southeast Missouri State University class in entrepreneurship is so popular the Harrison College of Business is offering a second section. And for some, the classwork could mean more than just some credit hours -- among those enrolled will be contestants hoping to win a grant and workspace to start their own business.

The Southeast Apprentice contest, sponsored by president Ken Dobbins and the Student Government Association, will choose up to 10 students based on a one- to two-page concept proposal, said Gina Harper of the Southeast Innovation Center.

The winners, who will be chosen based on business plans developed during the course, will receive grants of up to $5,000 each for start-up costs and six months' rent in the recently completed business incubator. The incubator has 11 office spaces totaling 4,200 square feet in which to house startup businesses.

TM Asia Life aims to be among top 5 players

KUALA LUMPUR: TM Asia Life Malaysia Bhd, the country's first Japanese-owned life insurance company, aims to build a stronger presence in the growing and competitive local market over the next few years.

To this end, the company had identified strategies that had proven successful in Japan and localised them, said deputy chief executive officer Jun Tokura.

“With these strategies in place, we hope to be ranked among the top five players in the sector within the next five years from our current 10th position and enlarge our market share from 3% to 5%.

“To fortify our foothold, we will be banking on two areas – building our agency force and rolling out specialised products that meet market needs,'' he said in an interview.

Tokura added that the company aimed to grow its agency force to 4,000 next year from 2,300 presently.

Radnor pharmaceutical company gets $14.5M in funding

Yaupon Therapeutics closed on a $14.5 million round of venture capital financing Monday.

The Radnor, Pa., specialty pharmaceutical company plans to use the proceeds to advance its multiple clinical programs.

The company's lead drug is Clearazidea, a topical agent for cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Clearazidea is currently in late-stage testing.

The funding will also position Yaupon to pursue the use of Lobeline -- a dopamine modulating agent in mid-stage testing for methamphetamine addiction -- for neuropsychiatric conditions including attention deficit disorder and Tourette's syndrome.

The financing was led by Vivo Ventures of Palo Alto, Calif.., and included additional funding from Palo Alto Investors LLC and other unnamed private investors.

Immigrants Crucial to NY Success?

One in five college professors and more than 1/3 of the doctors in upstate New York are immigrants. That's according to a study designed to calculate the economic contributions of foreign-born workers.

The Fiscal Policy Institute says immigrants contributed $229 billion last year to New York State's gross domestic product, or 22 percent of total output.

There are about four million immigrants living in New York State. While almost 75 percent live in New York City, researchers say their contributions are crucial to the economic success of the entire state.

The labor-backed think tank says it did the study to add perspective to the immigration issue.

The U.S. Small Business Administration Thursday recognized the top lenders in the state for providing SBA-backed start-up and expansion loans to small businesses, as well as the government agencies that signed the most contracts with minority firms."These lenders help provide economic opportunities for those looking to go into business," said Michelle Johnston, the state SBA director.Glacier Bancorp, headquartered in Kalispell and the holding company for Valley Bank of Helena among other community banks around the state, was the top SBA lender in the year ended Sept. 30, making 76 loans totaling nearly $6.6 million.
