Choteau needs to replace sewage lagoon

The city of Choteau needs to replace its lagoon system, engineers with HKM Engineering told the city council at its Nov. 6 meeting.

Engineer Kevin Johnson said the city has been coping with lagoon and sewage collection system problems dating back more than 15 years. The good news, he said, is that the city has made huge gains in reducing infiltration of groundwater into the lagoon since 1996. But the bad news is that the city sewage system is still taking in about 2.5 times as much flow as a community this size should generate. In fact, Johnson said, Choteau's sewage flow is equivalent to a community four times Choteau's size, mainly because groundwater is still leaking into faulty sewer pipes and diluting the lagoon.

The city's ongoing sewer main replacement on Seventh Avenue Northwest will further reduce infiltration problems, Johnson said.

Commission Grants Exemption

The Commerce Commission has granted Lloyd Morrison an exemption under the Electricity Industry Reform Act 1998 (the EIR Act) in relation to his potential appointment to the board of Auckland International Airport Limited (AIAL), an electricity lines business.

If Mr Morrison became a Director of AIAL, an electricity lines business, it would result in a cross involvement, as Mr Morrison is already a Director of Wellington International Airport Limited (WIAL) and TrustPower Limited, both electricity supply businesses. .

Muddying the Green waters

THE ecological debate took unexpected twists yesterday with Greens leader Bob Brown attacking environmentalist Tim Flannery, and failed NSW Liberal leader Peter Debnam undermining federal Coalition policy.

Both moves affect the battle for the marginal Sydney seat of Wentworth, where Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull is under electoral pressure over his failure to ratify the Kyoto protocol and his approval of Gunns's proposed Tasmanian pulp mill.

Professor Flannery, a noted writer, scientist, campaigner on environmental issues and Australian of the Year, angered Senator Brown for publicly supporting Mr Turnbull.

In a newspaper interview, Professor Flannery said he would vote for Mr Turnbull if he had the chance and that parliament needed more people like him to tackle climate change.
