| Mac OS X Leopard: A perfect 10
No one is unhappy with Mac OS X Version 10.4, known as Tiger. OS X is not an application platform (I bristle at using the term "operating system" for OS X; I explain why below) that needed repair, speeding up, or exterior renovation. Motivations for major upgrades of competing system software ??? roll-ups of an unmanageable number of fixes, because the calendar says it's time, or because users are perceived to have version fatigue ??? don't apply to OS X. Apple wields no whip to force upgrades because Tiger stands no risk of being neglected by Apple or third-party developers as long as Leopard lives. Despite the absence of a stick that drives users into upgrades of competing OSes, or perhaps because of it, Apple enjoys an extraordinary rate of voluntary OS X upgrades among desktop and notebook users.
Buying a business can pay off for entrepreneurs
A serial entrepreneur who owned half a dozen companies, Steve Rabenberg knew the demands of starting a business. But when he scouted his next venture, Rabenberg wanted a quicker path to profit. Instead of opening another company, he bought one: formerly Sunkiss Tan in St. Charles. Although many small-business owners set up their own companies, some entrepreneurs take over existing ventures, forgoing control of startup decisions, like picking store locations and suppliers, for the comfort of a steady cash flow. Business experts caution potential owners to examine a company's profitability before taking the reins, but they said it could be a safer bet because the business already has customers. "The day you buy an existing business, you have cash flow," said David Marlo, owner of the Saint Louis Group Business Brokers, a firm in south St.

Internet Yellow Pages: Worth The Effort?
Here at the end of 2007, it's painfully obvious that the local search advertising market remains highly fragmented. Numerous local search experts attending the recent SMX Local & Mobile Conference reiterated the observation that businesses seeking to target local audiences have a plethora of options, and identifying and selecting the right locally-focused sites can be an overwhelming task for small business people who have limited time to devote to the task. So, where should you choose to devote your time and budget? What's the minimum number of sites you should appear in and which are the best for you? This article is geared towards businesses targeting local audiences, rather than businesses who do nationwide advertising—and specifically, how to choose the best internet yellow pages ("IYPs") for your ads and those where it's important to spend time optimizing your free listings.
The business of Search
When GoTo.com introduced paid search engine advertising almost a decade ago, the idea of auctioning rank in keyword search results and attaching text advertisements was controversial. People felt search results should be pure, said Ellen Siminoff, president/CEO Efficient Frontier Inc. [Other] concerns were: Could you get enough relevant advertising with search? Is it clear[ly] advertising? Will [people] click? The answer was yes to each of those questions. GoTo.com went public, renamed itself Overture Services and was bought by Yahoo. MarketingSherpas Search Marketing Benchmark Guide 2007 reported paid search generated nearly $8 billion last year. EMarketer projects ad spend for paid search will surpass $10 billion in 2008. Yahoo and Google are preducted to pocket 90 percent of this years spend.
