| Small business organizations form partnership
Two nonprofits aimed at helping small and minority-owned businesses succeed have formed an alliance to share services. The Cincinnati Business Incubator and the Greater Cincinnati Microenterprise Initiative said they have formalized their relationship with a memorandum of understanding. Under the agreement, CBI will offer GCMI clients a complimentary six-month affiliate client contract, and GCMI will provide CBI clients with customized business coaching and assistance in obtaining business loans. "When organizations like ours work together there is less duplication and we have more opportunity to market our services to a wider audience," said Wayne Hicks, president of CBI, in a news release. CBI, in Over-the-Rhine, is an incubator offering startup companies affordable office space, business services and other resources.
Ex-MP wanted top job as payback
A FORMER Tasmanian minister who struck an allegedly illegal monopoly deal with ex-deputy premier Bryan Green felt the ALP "owed" him and should appoint him governor, a court has heard. Former health minister John White has pleaded guilty to interfering with an executive officer by signing a deal with Mr Green to give his builder-accreditation firm a three-year monopoly. Mr Green has pleaded not guilty to the same charge, which carries a maximum jail term of 21 years. The deal, made in February and exposed by The Australian in June last year, ran contrary to the Building Act which stipulates the relevant minister must be able to appoint more than one accreditation body. At the start of the second week of Mr Green's trial before the Supreme Court yesterday, the jury continued to view DVDs of the police interview with the accused.

Ten Penny-Pinching Ideas for 2008
The year is drawing to a close and I can happily say that I've learned a few things in 2007. I've learned how safe the world is because Microsoft (NasdaqGS:MSFT - News) does not build airplanes. I've learned that if I'm ever asked to open the MTV Music Awards, I shouldn't show off my belly. And I'm also relieved to report that not only am I smarter than a fifth grader, I'm probably smarter than the 10 billion people watching that show. .

NEW YORK - With a wedding planned for August and a new mortgage to pay, Laura Capp and her fiancé don't have much money to spend on Christmas this year. So Capp and Fred Rihn will limit their gift list, try to make rather than buy some of the items they do give, and eliminate some holiday travel. "Luckily, my extensive extended family is also cutting back this year," Capp said. For the first time, her wing of the family in Pittsburgh probably won't travel to visit the Baltimore clan. "The high cost of gas is a factor," Capp said. "And some of us don't have time off of work - or need to save up the time for other things." Many Americans like Capp and Rihn are cutting their spending this holiday season, scaling back plans for Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, or looking for gifts that don't break their budgets.
